Wantirna Estate has quietly built a reputation over many years that should rival the likes of Rockford, Noon and Wendouree when it comes to boutique wineries doing something special. The wine they produce are of a consistently high quality, and even though not inexpensive represent very good value in my mind.

The 2010 Ameila is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted in 1963,as well as a proportion of Cabernet Franc that was planted in 1989. The grapes are grown without irrigation and produce a wine of intensity and class.

The wine is a deep but youthful red, there is an attractive leathery influence on the nose alongside brambly blackcurrant and blackberry. Well integrated oak is soaked up by dark berry fruits on the palate, the tannins are exceptional and give tremendous depth to the wine, it finishes with a cacophony of dark berry fruits, herbal notes and a suggestion of oak.

A wonderful wine now, under screw-cap this wines life will not be bounded.
