This wine is a blend of Shiraz, Lagrein, Nero d'Avola and Sagratino, all varieties grown at the immaculately tended to Chalmers vineyard in Heatchote Victoria.

I must say before writing this review I have a bias, having produced a 2011 and 2012 Lagrein from the Chalmers vineyard. In particular, the quality of fruit produced in 2011 was far superior to other growers visited during vintage.

This wine will be polarising for Australian drinkers, primarily due to the inclusion of Lagrein, Nero d'Avola and Sangratino in the blend, which are less known and understood varieties in Australia. The wine has also been made in a manner that showcases the grape varieties and not excess oak, with a funky, rustic expression of Heathcote terroir and alternative varieties.

The nose shows savoury red fruits with dried meats and brine, the palate is structural with gripping tannins, bright acidity and a savoury core of dusty plum and cherry throughout. There is just enough oak to round out the wine and add a suppleness, the finish lingers with a savoury earthiness.

I discussed this wine with my wife i described it as one I would give to a friend who loves wine, but not someone who is trying it for the first time
