The first ever vintage of Hanging Rock Shiraz produced from a leased vineyard in Heathcote that succumbed to salinity in 1992. A pity given the longevity of this wine 30 years on !

The vintage conditions in 87 were good with a moderate yield and the wine seeing 18 months in new American oak.

The colour is still holding well with a slight browning toward the rim of the glass. The nose is a triumph over time with flashes of oak sweetness still enjoying a partnership with primary plum fruit and a secondary suggestion of earth.

Tannins are fully resolved, but are balanced by both acid and leathery plum fruit. There is structure and length to finish that beguiles this wines age and it is showing no signs of falling over in the shorter term.

It’s not often you get such a great experience from a piece of vinous history.
