1982 Taltarni Cabernet Sauvignon
Wine Rating

91
This wine was tasted blind, with the colour alone showing how well Taltarni releases hold up with extended cellaring.

At 31 years of age the colour is still a deep red with touches of brick around the rim, I was thinking mid 90’s and was amazed when it was revealed as 1982.

The nose is leather, dusty olive with subdued blackberry, all very much secondary characters, true to the cabernet varietal.

It is always a wonderful experience when an old wine is singing, and this one certainly was, as expected there was minimal fruit characters, however the tannin and acid structure was excellent.

In terms of the palate the tannins were chalky and drying, with dark fruits pushed to the background and drying acidity adding texture, the finish had elements of white pepper.

Old wines will never be for everyone, if you like fruit driven stay clear, but for me drinking a wine that is older than you in such good condition is always a great experience.
