Review Detail
2016 Sidewood Estate Owen’s Chardonnay
Wine Rating
96
This wine bears the name of the Sidewood Estate owner, Owen Inglis. Chardonnay is his passion so he puts his name to the best of the variety that is produced by Sidewood's talented winemaker Daryl Catlin.
The wine was sourced from a single vineyard, wild yeast fermented and matured in a mix of both new and older French Oak. A small amount of malolactic fermentation was allowed which gives another layer of complexity to a wine that is a beautiful assembly of it’s constituent components.
There is an understated elegance that sets this wine apart, even though there is a raft of winemaking technique it reveals itself slowly with flashes of mealy richness and wood smoke, but never anything that takes away from the pure expression of nectarine and white peach that’s works against a tantalising line of lemony acidity.
Elegant, complex and just a baby, give this wine a few years and watch it shine.
