This wine is from the Toowoomba in QLD, and i’m the first to admit i am yet to do the QLD wine region justice but give it time and i will make some inroads.

Granite Gravels is a side project of Peter McGlashan who is the viticulturist and winemaker at Ridgemill Estate, it’s one of the more interesting wines i’ve tried for a while given i didn’t know what to expect with a Gamay from Toowoomba.

The wine itself is made in a Beaujolais style, but maybe not quite ‘nouveau’ as i don’t think it goes straight to bottle. The wine sees no oak, is 100% whole bunch and had no fining and filtration. The back story alone makes this wine interesting !

The nose gives a smokey savoury character that is backed by earth and cherry, over time it gains some sweeter stem characters. Juicy cherry and a touch of raspberry give good mouth feel on entry with framing tannins providing contrast on the mid palate. The finish reverts to the more savoury spectrum with drying dark cherry.

This won’t be a wine everyone loves, but for me it’s a point of difference… Gamay from the QLD !
