The Chinon appellation is on the banks of the Vienne River, a tributary of the Loire. The appellation has 19 communes and a total area of 2400 hectares.
The predominate variety produced from Chinon is Cabernet Franc due to the climate and soil conditions suiting the variety.
The 2010 release from Domaine Jean-Maurice Raffault has a youthful purple to red hue in the glass, the nose is steeped in tarry blackberry fruit with background oak influences and a little funk adding complexity.
The tannin structure of this wine is impeccable, it provides a basis from which taught blackcurrant and blackberry fruits drive a savoury, mouth filling experience.
The wine has very good length of violets and dark berry fruits to finish.
As with many wines from Loire, and a general rule of thumb with French wines, food brings out the best.
