Barbera is a red Italian variety that, as of 2000, was the third most-planted red grape variety in Italy (after Sangiovese and Montepulciano). It's known for it's deep colour, low tannins and high levels of acid.
The 2012 Barbera produced by Witchmount is from estate grown fruit and sees 12 months in seasoned French and American barrels, some adept winemaking produces a wine that gives varietal character and harnesses the wines reputation for high acid to give structure and depth.
Oak inputs are evident on the nose, with toasty vanillin characters that are cut through by raspberry and blackberry fruit, a little savoury new leather is there as well.
The wine is medium bodied with great structure, there are brambly black and red fruits, savoury herbs and a touch of spice supported by rounded vanillin characters.
The wines acid structure gives length and elegance to the finish, the tannins are framing.
