The term Collalto means High Hill' in Italian, and in this case it is also the name given to the vineyard this wine comes from in Lenswood (460m above sea level). The wine is a medium red hue a slight copper hue towards the rim. The nose is intriguing, it has some varietal dark cherry, but there is a lot more going on with background lavender, cured meat and sage ever so subtle.
The palate has a minerality and firmness that is reminiscent of wines from Nuits St George with a tightly bound palate that gives savoury earth alongside dark cherry, wild strawberry and herbaceous spice that's not too far from tomato leaf. The tannins and oak give excellent support in equal measure to the wines nervy minerality with good length to finish. This wine will certainly cellar well.
