Tasting
I get what the fuss is about, i have heard about the virtues of Pyramid Valley for a few years, but hadn't had the opportunity to try. This is a monumentally complex and enjoyable Pinot Noir and is amongst the most complete and compelling i have tried from New Zealand.
The wines colour speaks volumes of the winemaking and viticulture approach, it's cloud and slightly browning toward the rim, usually not a great sign but when you put your nose to the glass there is such a complex and far fetching array of aromas you realise that the cloudy hue is just part of the charm. The nose gives something more every time you take a look, there is floral spice, dark cherry and rhubarb, bracken and earth all in different levels of concentration and focus.
The palate has a silkiness to it with super fine tannin meshing with a lithe line of acidity, layers of baking spice weave their way in and out of red cherry and smokey rhubarb fruit. There is a pine forrest and earthen aspect that lingers to finish.
It's not cheap, but its impressive !
