I think i have made it known i am a fan of Henk, so i must say i was excited to see the 864 release from Oakridge sourced from the Aqueduct block within the aforementioned vineyard.
Whole berry fermented for 3 weeks and then pressed to French oak, of which 10% was new. The wine was left of gross lees for 10 months, prior to racking and being left on lees for a further 5 months prior to bottling.
The nose meets you with red cherry, lifted by gentle spice and rhubarb. Supple yet piercing, a wonderful tension between beautifully ripe red and black cherry fruit, supportive acidity and fine but impactful tannins that have a earthen and smoked edge when you look hard.
The finish shows purity of fruit and suggestion of spice. This is still such a baby, it needs a couple of years to really show itself, even though Henk is looking superb as a youngster.
