Only 250 dozen bottles were produced from the famed Abel clone of Pinot Noir. The clone is supposedly sourced from the Romanee Conti vineyard in Burgundy, which was then widely cultivated in New Zealand.
A light to medium red in the glass, the nose has alluring spice with red and dark cherry combining with faint earth. The palate is supple, but there is a steady build of tannin that takes on wet clay and a continuation of the baking spice seen on the nose; a characteristic of the clone given there was no new oak. The finish is savoury and steeped in black cherry, the length is very good.
