Sidewood are producing a number of single clone wines that are not only educational, but incredibly enjoyable to drink.
The Abel clone famously comes from Romanee-Conti and was supposedly smuggled back in a gumboot to New Zealand, with a number of New Zealand's finest producers basing their Pinot Noir blends on the clone. It is relatively new to Australia, but producers like Sidewood are producing spectacular results.
In terms of winemaking there were 30% whole bunches, and partial whole berries in the wild yeast ferment before ageing in older French oak. This ensured the wines is a representation of place and clone, less of oak influence.
A decidedly light red in the glass with beautifully composed aromatics of dark cherry and undergrowth; the palate is medium bodied with tannins and acid giving shape and context to earthen, spiced red fruits. The finish focuses on red cherry with a savoury inflection.
