Shiraz from Macedon Ranges is about as cool climate as you get, the 2006 from Granite Hills showcases the ability for wines from the variety and region to grow in stature with time in the cellar.
A deep red in the glass with duller hues towards the rim, the nose gives leathery plum fruits and olive with rich but not over the top oak. The palate is brooding with taut tannins and a drying mouthfeel despite extended time in bottle, the wines texture adds a counterpoint to the more expressive olive, black pepper and liquorice all sorts that support the brambly dark fruits.
The wine certainly has a lot more life left in it and worth seeking out if your looking for a different yet enjoyable expression of cool climate Shiraz.
