This wine is primarily available through cellarmasters in Australia, as the story goes it is based on the declassified fruit from the super premium wines in the Torbreck stable.
The 2011 Sporran provides even more intrigue given a number of 2011 flagship reds were not produced.
The wine itself comes in at 15% alcohol, and is a youthful red to purple in colour, the nose has ripe plum with a touch of raspberry that is initially slightly reductive, but gets more savoury over time.
The palate shows a wine of two halves, on entry there is the dense dark fruit driven style that Torbreck is known for with some heady oak and leathery aspects. The wine continues with the same concentration and power, but there is a dark cocoa bitterness that melds with spice and begins to dominate the wine on the finish.
Over time this bitterness may soften, but more than likely it will be the fruit that fades, rendering the wine angular.
I hope it is the former, because it has the potential to be a very good wine.
