Tasting
This wine takes the Head releases to another level, the marketing material reads that it is only produced in exceptional years and represents the best of what the winery can produce. This is a case where the marketing material aligns with reality.
The nose is complex and gives more each time you look at it, there is the dense red and dark fruits you would expect, but it's the secondary stem, sage and iodine characters that provide the real interest.
A layered palate that has both power and restraint, there is a real elegance to the wine with background sage and a touch of eucalyptus giving another dimension to the deep dark plum fruit and quality french oak. The tannins and quality of fruit shine through on the finish with wood spice lingering.
An exceptional wine, well worth the price.
