Tasting
This wine was fermented and left on skins for up to six weeks prior to being aged in French oak for 14 months, interestingly there was only a small proportion of new oak (10 - 15%). It is this minimal oak input that lets the fruit shine, with heavy handed oak one of my main complaints about a number of Heathcote wines.
The wine is a deep red in colour, the nose has leathery plum and background spice, it has excellent balance with a mineral savouriness sitting alongside deep red fruits and ever so subtle baking spice. Very good length to finish, this is a wine for the cellar and a great expression of what can be done in the region.
