Tasting
This wine is truly remarkable, the Langi represents the pinnacle of cool climate Shiraz in Australia with the 2012 Shiraz the best i've tasted, in fact it is one of the best Australian wines i have had the pleasure to review, which is no mean feat given the current number is 1700 and counting.
The Langi is sourced from the old block vineyard that is planted with clonal material from the Nursery block in Great Western, the site is at the base of Mount Langi Ghiran and just opposite Mount Cole, resulting in cool airflows that allow for a long even ripening period.
The wine itself is a youthful purple to red in colour, it has plum, stem, spice and wood smoke on the nose with haunting complexity.
The palate is savoury yet dense with a purity of peppery plum fruit. There are waves of texture with sandalwood spices that accentuate the fruit and stemmy tannins giving an excellent mouth feel. The finish is considerable, with supporting oak to match the impossibly elegant fruit and spices.
