Shaw and Smith are arguably best known for their quintessential expression of Sauvignon Blanc and their layered and complex M3 Chardonnay, however their Shiraz continues to impress and highlights the subtlety and fruit driven nature of the best Australian cool climate Shiraz.
The 2012 Shiraz was sourced from Balhannah and Macclesfield vineyards with yield's being lower than average, which is certainly evident in the finished wine given the intense red and blue fruit characters.
In terms of colour the wine is a medium red with youthful purple hues towards the rim, the nose gives crushed raspberry and savoury cherry fruits that are backed by a suggestion of oak.
The palate highlights the fruit driven nature and sheer concentration of the wine, tightly bound and structured red berry fruits are completed by integrated drying tannins; another dimension is added by baking spices and a touch of liquorice on the finish.
This wine is just a baby and given time in the bottle will continue to develop secondary characters. A superb wine.
