Matt Burton is producing some great wines and is undoubtedly one of the up and coming winemakers in Australia.
His rendition of Canberra District Shiraz (with a dash of Viognier) is beautifully perfumed and generously dark fruited but maintains a peppery, herbaceous core that makes it such an interesting wine.
The wine spent 12 months in French oak, of which 30% was new. The new oak added a baking spice like note to the expressive blackberry and black cherry fruit on the nose.
There is a distinct vibrancy of dark fruits on the palate with a textured mouthfeel that moves towards a more earthen expression of blackberry fruit with an edge of dried herbs and pepper. The length to finish is excellent.
