It is always a pleasure to taste the new lineup of local vineyard series wines from Oakridge. Most follow a very similar approach to winemaking, yet the intricacies and unique characters of vineyard sites within the Yarra Valley are on full show. The Barkala is the most restrained, almost chablis like in some ways of the releases and one that promises to give plenty in times to come.
The nose opens with lemon and white peach with some oyster shell and almond-meal notes a secondary thought. There is an attractive almost mineral character to the wine born from the citrus derived structures on top of which there is a slow build of stone fruits. The finish enjoys the subtle nuttiness that comes from time on lees and a suggestion of spice, very good length.
