Merlot is not the first variety you think of when you consider the great varieties in Australia, and it was with an element of apprehension i approached a Merlot that was nearing it’s 16th birthday, even if it does come from one of South Australia’s better producers of the variety.

The wine is question was the 98 Terra Rossa Merlot, as expected it was a medium red hue with a dull, slightly browning meniscus. The nose showed age and complexity with earthy leather, plum and dried meats.

There is excellent balance given time in bottle, with the interplay of fruit and secondary leather complexity that only time in bottle can provide. The tannins are integrated and supple with oak playing a secondary role, and the wine finishes with length of drying plum.

Drinking at it’s peak, it will be a steady decline over the next couple of years.
