Review Detail
2014 Grey Sands The Mattock
Wine Rating
94
This is a blend of Merlot (60%), Malbec (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%) and is the 3rd release of the wine.
A nose of black fruits, peppercorn and understated sage with undergrowth and oak induced spice in the background.
There is an undeniable attraction to tight grain new French Oak that is written all over the palate, with the cool climate fruit doing more than enough to meet it in terms of flavour and texture.
Plum fruit, with a peppery aspect is given a wash by brine and earth, tannins are framing and envelope the wine. The acidity cuts through to finish with significant length of back fruits, and baking spice from the oak.
