Review Detail
2012 Pimpernel GSM2
Wine Rating
92
Pimpernel are a next door neighbour of Yarra Yering, with Mark Horrigan (Owner & Winemaker) fortunate enough to spend some time with the late Bailey Carrodus which could only help the quality of Pimpernel wines.
The 2012 GSM is a vibrant red in colour, with a nose of strawberry and raspberry fruits that is given a musky vanillin lift that i would swear was viognier, but on inspection turned out to be muscat of alexander.
The wine is decidedly medium bodied, but expresses bright clean red fruits against a backdrop of savoury, structural tannins, layered spices and fresh acidity. This is a style that pushes the boundaries but is executed very well.

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the review (finally saw it) - I'm curious, which boundaries? M

Hi Mark,
It pushes the boundaries in terms of how to express Grenache from a cooler climate, i.e. it's an atypical expression of what consumers would consider Australian Grenache when compared to the warmer climate Barossa and McLaren vale fruit bombs!
I hope all is going well, and i look forward to popping in next time i'm in the Yarra Valley. i continue to follow your wines with interest.
