Other Red February 03, 2014
2012 Stone Bridge Grenache Mataro
Wine Rating

92
A wine that I wasn't expecting from the Clare valley, with both Grenache and Mataro less prevalent than the more ubiquitous Shiraz.

I must say that the elegance and subtlety of the Grenache at moderate alcohol and the savoury meatiness of the Mataro make this a compelling wine for the region.

In terms of colour the wine is a medium to dark red, the nose has dark cherry and plum with savoury undertones. The palate has a balance of primary red fruits and earthy dark chocolate characters.

There is juicy plum on entry, with a touch of white pepper and fine supporting tannins that lead toward an earthy and leathery expression of Mataro that is supported by well integrated vanillin oak. The finish has depth of drying tannins.
