Pinot Noir August 18, 2012
1998 Nicholson River Pinot Noir
Wine Rating

91
An aged Australian Pinot is a somewhat unique experience in general with only more recent vintages being made with the structure and balance to reward cellaring.

The 1998 from Nicholson River is an example of the old brigade that was made to cellar.

The wine is a light brick red in colour that is browning towards the rim.

The nose evolves over time in the glass ranging from an initial confected cherry, to choc mint and eventfully stewed red berries and undergrowth.

The palate is showing its age and has a leathery backdrop against which dull plum , rosemary and subtle spices evolve and linger.

The finish has drying tannins and balanced acid; leathery plum is the lasting impression.

This wine certainly won't be for everyone, but it has interest and complexity that deserves respect.
